SCTC facilitates the Annual Jan Craig Lecture and
organises conferences and workshops aimed at improving knowledge and understanding
of major counselling issues.
For 15 years until April 2001 Jan Craig had been
active in working for disadvantaged people. First she helped set up the Southampton
Well Woman Centre, where she was one of the first volunteers, and then in helping
to organise the change at the Southampton Counselling and Therapy Centre for
Women, which became the Southampton Counselling and Therapy Centre (SCTC).
During these years she undertook extensive training
in psychodynamic counselling, first with the Southampton Pastoral Counselling
Service and then a further Advanced Diploma at the Wessex Counselling Service
(WPS) in Frome.
Jan was one of the main trainers at the SCTC and
the person responsible for ensuring that the volunteer counselling provision
was of a high standard. The need for high standards in counselling, especially
for those whose choices were restricted by disadvantage, was one of the leading
motivations in her work.
It is not only her clients who will have benefited
from her dedication to providing the best service possible, but also the many
volunteers who have worked with her, over these years, at the Centre.
She often seemed a hard taskmaster. But those who
were able to see that she wanted the best for them, as well as the best from
them, were grateful for the encouragement to go as far as they were able.
The Annual Jan Craig Memorial Lecture raises funds
to support our counselling services.
